Story Time With Peggy Halliday Young - MaLizze And The Shoes (Book 7)
Everyday MaLizze MaGoose hears the chickens'cackle.
They cackle over everything and always cluck the
same thing.
Buk, Buk, Buk, Ba-Daw-Cut
I lay an egg everyday and go barefoot, barefoot, barefoot
I lay an egg everyday and go barefoot!
"Poor dears!" MaLizze thinks. "They do lay an egg
everyday and go barefoot. Poor dears!"
And MaLizze gets an idea!
SHE WILL GET SHOES FOR THE CHICKENS!
She goes into the people's house and collects all
the shoes she can find.
Father's rough shoes
Grandpa's slippers
Mother's heeled shoes
Grandma's rubbers
Boy's creepy sneakers
Girl's leaping dancers
Shoes all shapes
Shoes all sizes
Even baby's cute wee booties
She collects them so quickly and quietly no one
hears her. She takes them to her coop to look
them over.
Some are bright and shiny new
Some are worn and old
Some have long and stringy laces
Some have ties in different places
Some have gold and silver buckles
Some have velvet bows.
Father comes in the house from working
and takes off his muddy rubber boots.
"Where are my shoes?" he asks.
Grandma and Grandpa want to change their
shoes. "Where are our shoes?" they say
together.
Boy needs his creepy sneakers.
Girl wants her leaping dancers.
Baby wants his cute wee creepers.
"Where are our shoes?" they all ask.
They oogle in their closets.
They search beneath the beds.
They peer under tables and move around the chairs.
Where are all their shoes?
MaLizze counts and re-counts her collection
of shoes. Then, satisfied, she settles back
on her nest straw to wait. Finally, a silly
chicken comes running past, clucking.
"Buk Buk Buk Ba-Daw-Cut.
I lay an egg everyday and go barefoot, barefoot, barefoot.
I lay an egg everyday and go barefoot!"
"Go barefoot no more!" MaLizze shouts
and tosses her a pair of high heel shoes.
She gives shoes to another
clucking chicken--then another--and
another. Soon, all the chickens are
wearing great big human shoes.

Some have big shoes, Some have small.
Some wear short shoes. Some have tall.
Shoes with velvet bows.
Shoes with brassy buckles. Toeless shoes.
Shoes, all sizes.
Shoes of all descriptions.
MaLizze shoes every clucking chicken.
Are the chickens happy because they are
no longer barefoot?
Some act puzzled, amazed, or humbled.
Some are mad as bees who bumble.
Some don't care.
Some won't wear because shoes make
them stumble.
However, MaLizze is happy and very
pleased with herself.
"HONK HONK HONK!" she cries happily
shoeing herself with Grandma's high
toppers before taking a stroll around
the chicken yard.

Boy looks out of the kitchen window.
He is barefoot, her feet are cold,
and he has bumped his big toe on a
chair leg. He sees the chickens
and stares at the shoes. "There are
our shoes!" he cries.
"It's MaLizze! cries Girl, "She has
given our shoes to the chickens!
But why?'
